About HRSG
Horsham Refugee Support Group is a Registered Charity run entirely by volunteers.
Our group came into being in response to the dreadful news of Alan Kurdi which shocked the world. We knew that we had to do something to help those fleeing conflict when we were so fortunate to live safely in the UK.
We formed with the support of Citizens UK and their campaign “Refugees Welcome”, which asked area coordinators to support their local councils in taking refugees under the government’s Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme for Syrian Nationals, so that those in power knew that communities wanted to welcome refugees. Since that time, we have seen the needs in our community increase, following refugee crises in Afghanistan and Ukraine.
We work with around 250 refugees and asylum seekers in Horsham District, linking in with West Sussex County Council and Horsham District Council. We have a team of volunteers who offer befriending services and support with learning English, as well as homework support for children and teenagers. We keep in contact with groups and individuals across the district to get them involved when needs arise. We deliver talks and presentations to those who want to know more about refugees and how to support them locally.
